When it comes to exercise, our reasons for doing so are often related to losing weight, getting fit and reducing the risk of developing certain diseases. What we’re yet to factor in is the detail that it can improve your lifespan – and we have the research that will back this up.

It makes sense, right? If we’re exercising to become better versions of ourselves – and to prevent the onset of certain diseases – then it’s only logical that, by default, we’re also prolonging our lives? This long-living benefit is not only linked to the physical aspect of exercise but on a cellular level as well.

The Research

Brigham Young University led a study of almost 6 000 adults and found that the ends of the chromosomes (telomeres), which shorten as we age, are longer in active individuals than those who lead slow-paced lifestyles. This resulted in almost a nine-year age difference between active and inactive individuals

In a second study, they compared the muscles, lungs and heart of active and inactive 70-year olds as well as that of active 40-year olds. The active group of 70-year olds were found to have similar heart, lung and muscle capacity compared to those of the 40-year-old age group.

How Often Should You Exercise?

You don’t necessarily need to sign up for a marathon or CrossFit competition to improve your life span. Regular activity such as daily walks has been found to increase your lifespan by almost seven years compared to inactive people. This has been achieved regardless of age, weight, gender and pre-existing health conditions.

A simple 15-minute walk has the potential to change your life and as long as you make it a habit – and occasionally step up the intensity. It’s recommended that the average person needs 150 minutes of exercise a week. Don’t let the time frame scare you. This can include anything from cleaning the house to a trip to the mall and even walking around the home.

It is certainly not too late to start with an exercise plan, even if you’ve been inactive for years. By slowly incorporating exercise into your lifestyle, you can increase your lifespan. We do, however, advise that you speak with your doctor if you have been inactive as they will have the best advice to get you started on your exercise journey – from body-appropriate exercises to healthy eating habits and everything in between.

Working in an office for around 40 hours a week – or more when things get busy – can take its toll on your body. Between zooming between the office and home and doing household tasks – in addition to working 9 – 5 – there’s very little time to fit a workout in.

You could, of course, wake up at crack of dawn and fit a workout in before the day begins. But that’s more than likely going to cut into your sleeping schedule, and we all know how important sleep is.

You’re Not Alone

Exercise not only boosts your fitness levels but also relieves stress and releases endorphins. While we all want to make the time for it, it’s hard to. According to research which was done recently, only one in three adults gets the recommended 150 minutes of exercise a week. A study by fitness.gov also found that, in the United States, 28% of the population older than 60 years old are inactive.

Desk Exercises, Are They Even Beneficial?

Sitting behind your computer for hours upon hours at a time can take its toll on your health. In addition to this, it can impact your work performance. A research study conducted by the American College of Sports Medicine and the Journal of Workplace Health Management reported that 60% of office-bound employees felt an improvement in their problem-solving skills, time management and ability to meet deadlines following an exercise session.

In addition to this, on exercise days 27% were able to better cope with stress while 47% felt more motivated about working.

By including exercise in your workday, it allows you to take regular breaks to improve your productivity. In addition, you could take it a step further and ask your boss to dedicate a 15-minute slot during the day for exercise. This way you’re working in a healthier environment alongside people with similar goals.

Let’s take it upon ourselves to find ways to remain active wherever we may be – no excuses. To get started, let’s take a look at nine exercises that you can do at your desk.

 

9 Desk-Friendly Exercises

Neck stretches: Sitting at your desk, slowly lower your chin and roll your head and shoulders. Slowly straighten your arms out straight in front of you, hold for a few seconds and then release. Repeat if necessary.

Wrist stretches: Extend your arms out in front of you with your palms facing upwards. Slowly turn your palms towards one another and press them together.

Leg raises: Sitting at your desk. Maintain your right foot in a flat on the floor and bring your left leg up so that it moves parallel to the ground. Lower and repeat on the other side.

Chair dips: Sitting on the edge of your seat, put your legs out in front of you. Place your arms alongside your hips and grab the edges of the seat. Slowly lift your body off of the chair and then slowly lower it back down. Repeat a few times.

Calf raises: Standing with arms by your side, slowly lift the balls of your feet and hold for a few seconds before releasing. Repeat a few times.

Shadowboxing: This one is not so discreet but will do a great job at getting rid of frustrations. It is pretty self-explanatory. Just punch the air in front of you – be sure to have a safe distance between you and your computer!

Dumbbell curls: Using water bottles of the same weight, or any office supplies of the same weight, you can perform dumbbell curls and lateral raises – to name but a few. It’s as simple as that.

Planking: Wherever you may be standing around, the potential for performing a leaning plank is there. Take a step back from the table or counter and then lean against it. Hold for as long as you can.

Chest opener: Perch on the edge of your seat. Put both hands on the base of your neck and slowly round your shoulders and roll them in a circle. Repeat a few times.

Finding time to exercise is important in more ways than one. Our tips for exercising at your desk can be used anywhere with a chair or table, which means that it’s not limited to the office. You can also supplement your office exercise with a quick walk around the building to get in your daily dose of cardio. There’s really no excuse to lead an inactive lifestyle!

The clear information about different classes of Nutrients and the energy needs of the body.  The part on micronutrients was amazing because I wasn’t aware of the body requirements of these nutrients and how they affect the body. The interrelationship between the nutrient, minerals, hormones and macronutrients was clearly discussed and gave me a clear view of how the body works with different types of food.

The short videos and the illustrating pictures. The introduction videos are helpful in introducing the module and its components in a summarised manner. The illustrating pictures and diagrams were also helpful in visualising the content of that particular section or module. The setup of the online platform is user-friendly with no confusion.

Yes, because Trifocus has the best service, best learning material model and clear information. The modules are interconnected with clear information that magnifies your knowledge in understanding the relationship between exercise, your body and nutrition. The admin has been helpful and always available when I call for something I need clarity on.

It has empowered me with information that I didn’t possess before and now I’m more aware of my diet and nutritional intake. Why did you choose Trifocus Fitness Academy for your college?

I chose Trifocus Fitness Academy because I was at a different college previously and they did not give me the same support base that Trifocus offered me. I know with Trifocus that I will be looked after and that they will be there to help and support if I have any questions. They will try their utmost best to help and accommodate me, even though I did a correspondence course. I could still phone them and they would help the best they could.

What course did you just complete?

I just completed my Personal training certificate and I’m in thee process of doing my Personal training diploma. After that I would like to pursue other qualifications as well.

What did you enjoy best about this course?

Fitness has always been my passion and I’ve always wanted to be a personal trainer. The part I enjoyed the most was the learning material because I’ve been in the fitness industry for three years now as a bodybuilder, but there were things in there that I didn’t even know myself. It was very informative and it really did educate me and change my perspective about the things I already knew and how I do my training and so on.

Why did you choose Trifocus Fitness Academy for your college?

My Name is Mandy Carline Binney and I live and breathe fitness. You can ask any member of my family or any one of my friends how dedicated, passionate, committed and motivated I am. It all started about 6 years ago when I decided to change my lifestyle. I lost both parents due to ill health and lack of healthy habits at ages 64 and 61. Then I decided, I wanted to live a longer, healthier lifestyle so I joined Virgin Active. I was never a Sporty Person, an Athlete of any sort, I was overweight and had a low self esteem. When I joined Virgin Active I was an overweight, 58.8kg, and a size 16.

This is my Fitness Journey.

Introduction

I started by just walking, cycling and rowing as that was all I was capable of doing without passing out. Eventually my fitness levels started increasing and I started with the circuit. Wow, what a workout, even still today. After that I incorporated the weights this was about a year later. I then decided I needed a Personal Trainer, as I could not do this on my own and I did not want to hurt myself, knowing the right techniques.

I then approached Torros Basson, one of the best Trainers at Menlyn. How did I know this you wonder, I watched all of them in that first year, and their clients. Torros had a client who was overweight and after a few months he had lost so much and was well toned. Not only did I see improvements in his clients, Torros worked just as hard at maintaining his fitness. I decided then, that, that was the Trainer I wanted – someone who not only gets results but upholds the image of fitness by executing it himself. Torros would help me with programs – he would train me for 3 days then I would be on my own, go back to him every 8 or so weeks for a new program.

I continued with Torros for about just over a year, the introduction to the weights was awesome, but I wanted more. So I decided to join a Running Club – Love Running. My endurance and stamina grew by the day, I eventually got to run my first 10km. The more I did the more I wanted to do, and this was when I decided I wanted to be a Personal Trainer. I had gone from a size 16 to an 8/10 basically half the person I was, dropped weight from 58,8kg – 48kg. I am currently now 54kg but still a size 8/10. Weight is not an issue for me as I have toned.

Setbacks

We all know that there are setbacks in the Fitness World, I was diagnosed with a stress fracture, which eventually after many x-rays, scans turned out to be nothing, this put me off training of legs for 6 months, I had lost so much time, this pushed me back to the start, I have still not gotten back to where I was before, but every day I try a little bit harder to get there.

Reasons why I became a Personal Trainer

Why is always the question… My main reason for wanting to be a Personal Trainer is to show people that your body can change. You can achieve a better lifestyle, look better with the right exercise and correct nutrition. Everybody’s body is different and to stop looking at magazines and supermodels, because you won’t necessarily ever look like them. You should be the best version of yourself, with hard work, patience and focus, push through. Nothing in life comes easy, you need to work for it.

The results are rewarding. I tell my friends to take the scale and throw it in the bin; I’d rather be heavy and toned than skinny and saggy. Weight has nothing to do with what you look like, you can weigh the same, but lose cm and body fat, and look amazing. I want to empower woman to not be scared of the weights section. The boys are intimidating yes, but if you stand your ground and work hard, you earn the respect you deserve. It takes a while, but soon they will start moving out of your way and stop staring, making you feel uncomfortable. Weights burn so much more, and tone your body; they are 10 times better than just doing the cardio.

I would also like to get the elderly more involved in exercise, even if it is simple little exercises. Even if it is just to increase flexibility so that daily tasks like tying their shoelaces will not be a problem. It will assist them in everyday life, like taking a walk without having to stop for being out of breath. Fitness will help them to be more alive and happy with life. Exercise releases endorphins and you stress less and tend to be a happier person.

I know the fight, he struggle, setbacks and failure, but I also know the success… I want to enrich the minds of others with the knowledge that I have, and the stories of blood, sweat and tears. Being able to associate and let them know that I understand their pain, as I was once in their shoes, is what makes it so great. I want them to be able to look in the mirror and love what they see. I am now more confident than I have ever have been and that is all thanks to fitness.

My Future

My ultimate goal and what matters to me most is changing the lives of others. I want to show them the capabilities of their bodies. Motivating healthier lifestyles, supporting and motivating people who need it most. Being the Best Trainer I can be, leading by example and showing the world, that ordinary can become extraordinary. I am not in this Industry to see how much money there is to be made. I studied so that I can help others become the best versions of themselves by having the knowledge of safety and to always have their best interests at heart. For me it is all about for the transformations, the smiles, the confidence, the appreciation; none of these things can be bought only earned.

What Course did you just complete?

I completed my Personal Training Certificate Last year. CPD courses: Fundamentals of Fitness Business, Pilates Ball and Athletic Nutrition.

What did you enjoy best about this course?

Personal Training : My case Study, being able to train someone. My CPD’s the wealth of knowledge I have gained, enables me to be a better Trainer and providing my clients with the best of me. Trifocus has a learning platform that keeps you interested and coming back for more!

How did you like the online learning material what parts of the online experience did you enjoy the most? (if the question is applicable)

I liked the videos. Sometimes with studying a book can be boring. Even when there are quizzes, the online platform keeps you interested and your hand does not get tired of writing. You stay focused and keep clicking away, eager to know what’s coming next and don’t want to leave your PC because so much more awaits you!

Would you recommend Trifocus to your colleagues and why?

Most Definitely, REPPSA gives us other CPD endorsed colleges, but I came back to Trifocus for my CPD’s. The consultants are great, the Assessors are friendly and make you feel comfortable. Trifocus helps, their courses don’t intimidate their students with knowledge they help you understand it first. Tri-Focus, the name says it all, 3 Focus Points, 1. Passion to be a Fitness Professional, 2. Knowledge, gain the knowledge and you can’t go wrong, 3. Work Ethic, work hard to be the best version of yourself and lastly Focus, Focus these 3 things and you won’t go Wrong!!!

How has becoming qualified with Trifocus improved your Life Style and Wellness out look?

It has helped me to understand that helping someone achieve their goals is better than watching them fail. For me it’s about the smile that the results bring to my clients. The self satisfaction that nobody can buy. When hard work pays off, that is when we Appreciate it most. Why did you choose Trifocus Fitness academy for your college?

My local gym suggested a few institutions through whom I can obtain the qualification I was seeking and Trifocus Fitness Academy was one of them. I researched all three the institutions and because Trifocus Fitness Academy provided me with the option to obtain my certification online, made it easy for me to choose Trifocus Fitness Academy. This meant that I can obtain my qualification and it will not have any impact on any of my travel obligations.

What course did you just complete?

I completed my Personal Trainer Certification through Trifocus Fitness Academy in June 2016 and as I am also very interested in the nutritional aspects involved in training and fitness and to better my own understanding in this regard and at the same time provide my clients with valuable information related to the subject I have just complete the Athletic Nutrition Course that also aided me in obtaining valuable CPD Points.

What did you enjoy best about this course?

The thing that I enjoyed most about the course was that it suited my situation 100%. The fact that I travel abroad on a regular basis makes it difficult for me to enrol for a course that requires me to be at one place for a specific and prolonged period of time. The course allowed me to work at my own pace and time from basically anywhere in the world.

How did you like the online learning material what part of the online experience did you enjoy the most?

The online material provided by Trifocus Fitness Academy was very informative and up-to-date. It is also easy to understand and easy to access. I also found it to be structured in a manner that allowed me to work through the material progressively.

I enjoyed the depth of the course. The course covered a large amount of psychology which I find to be very important in Personal Training as there are many reasons why people train the way they do. Weight has a lot to do with a person’s emotions and I believe it is extremely important to be able to be there for your client emotionally.

Why did you choose Trifocus Fitness Academy as your college?

I am Russian, I came to South Africa in 2012. For the first couple of years I was depressed and confused because everything was different. In Russia I studied languages but never really pictured myself being a translator. I always enjoyed PE classes at school, so I decided that I wanted to become a fitness instructor.

I googled fitness courses and found Trifocus Fitness Academy’s website. It was user-friendly, well-advertised, and I really liked the idea of doing a correspondence course. Courses are accredited so I trust the quality. Plus there is a good student support team.

What course did you complete?

I enrolled for the Exercise Science and Sports Nutrition course and completed in 2016.

What did you enjoy most about this course?

The best thing was definitely flexibility of studying and your student support team, because even though I studied English in Russia, it was still a bit difficult for me to study material in English and it did take me long time to complete the course. I had to go through translations all the time. But it made me more confident to talk to people about fitness after I studied theory in English. So thank you.

Would you recommend Trifocus to your colleagues, and why? 

I would definitely recommend Trifocus to people I know because I had a good experience. I did a correspondence course, but I’m more than sure that the online courses are just as good, if not better.

I think it’s very important to make education as easy and friendly as possible, considering that a lot of people who want to start this journey are busy with jobs, families and other things. So yes, because of flexibility of studying, competitive prices, good student support team, and accreditation I would recommend Trifocus. And I like the idea of studying online.

How has becoming qualified with Trifocus improved your Lifestyle and Wellness outlook?

I think the most important thing is that I became more confident. People actually talk a lot about a healthy lifestyle, and learning about fitness and nutrition really helped me to support a good conversation. Plus I apply everything I’ve learnt for myself.

It was very important for me to learn how to eat healthy. I used to eat junk food a lot in my past. And to be honest, I used to smoke. But when you become qualified in the fitness industry, you simply can’t support bad habits anymore. And all your friends know that you are into health and fitness so you have to support your image. Not even mentioning how badly smoking affects cardio. So yes, becoming qualified with Trifocus definitely improved my lifestyle as well as my image.

I went online to search for various fitness courses and Trifocus had a strong online presence. I compared the various institutions offering the courses and found Trifocus to be very reasonably priced. It also suited me that I could start at anytime.

What Course did you complete?

I did the personal trainer certificate, personal trainer diploma, kettlebell instructor courses. I am currently busy with the specialised nutrition course.

What did you enjoy most about this course?

I enjoyed learning how to do proper fitness assessments and drawing up balanced training programmes. Learning how to train special populations was also very interesting.

How did you like the online learning material and what parts of the online experience did you enjoy the most?

I did the kettlebell course online. The online platform was pretty easy to navigate and the assistance and feedback was quite quick. The instructional videos were also very handy.

Would you recommend Trifocus to your colleagues, and why?

I would recommend Trifocus to anyone looking to study a fitness course. From start to finish the staff were very eager to help and make the learning experience pleasurable. The course content and material were also very good.

How has becoming qualified with Trifocus improved your Lifestyle and Wellness outlook?

The courses I studied through Trifocus have helped me with my own training and outlook on fitness. I take a much more holistic approach to training. While I have not yet entered the fitness industry, it is comforting to know I have an internationally recognised qualification to fall back on in this volatile job market.

The world’s population is becoming increasingly unhealthy. Cardiovascular and heart disease, obesity and diabetes are on the rise. Becoming Healthier Increases Physical And Mental Health

Not only will exercising keep your body healthy and fit, but it will improve your mental health as well. Exercise is a great stress reliever. The reason for this, says the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, is that:

“When stress affects the brain, with its many nerve connections, the rest of the body feels the impact as well. So it stands to reason that if your body feels better, so does your mind. Exercise and other physical activity produce endorphins—chemicals in the brain that act as natural painkillers—and also improve the ability to sleep, which in turn reduces stress. And conventional wisdom holds that a workout of low to moderate intensity makes you feel energized and healthy. Scientists have found that regular participation in aerobic exercise has been shown to decrease overall levels of tension, elevate and stabilize mood, improve sleep, and improve self-esteem. Even five minutes of aerobic exercise can stimulate anti-anxiety effects.”

Carmen Crous is one busy lady! Not only is she a medical sales rep, she also runs her own make-up business, is a #TrifocusBrandAmbassador, and has also entered this year’s USN Face of Fitness. We caught up with her to find out what keeps her going.

I believe in balance

For Carmen, balance – in all aspects of her life – is vital. “Health comes first and we often regrettably tend not to listen to what our bodies are saying,” she says. Her advice, to people who want to embark on their own fitness journey, is to be in tune with oneself. If this happens, the results will be 100 times better than if this hadn’t been the case.


Why Carmen Crous entered the Face of Fitness

Carmen entered this competition as she felt that it would be a great building block for her fitness career. “It has given me an opportunity to connect with girls who’ve had the same struggles as I have,” she says. “I’ve also been able to share tools – which I’ve used – to overcome their struggles and come out stronger, and wiser. The Face of Fitness is the perfect platform to inspire, love and encourage other women!”

If you’ve ever felt like not going to work out because you feel a bit stiff and sore, think about Lee Binks and we’re 100% sure that you’ll be motivated to high tail it to gym! Motivated to start lifting weights because of health issues, she has built herself up to winning both local and international body building competitions. As one of our proud #TrifocusBrandAmbassadors, Lee brings her unique sense of motivation and passion to #TeamTrifocus. We chatted to her to find out what makes her tick.

A love for anything fitness

Lee is passionate about fitness – anything from weight lifting to sports. “I love to push my body and seeing what it’s capable of – whether it’s rock climbing, kayaking, scuba diving or training.” For her, it’s not just about getting to the end result but also the journey of getting there. She loves training as well as the process of goal-setting and achieving what you set out to do with a specific time frame.

Fitness and nutrition is about being healthy

Good nutrition isn’t about dieting or restricting oneself, says Lee Binks. “For me, eating right is about fueling your body to give it what it needs to sustain your lifestyle.” Training is about having more energy, being fitter, having more focus, drive, motivation and getting the happy endorphins from your training.”

The value of fitness education

Being able to study the theory – and understand the process – behind fitness helps Lee both in her personal goals and applying these to her everyday life. Having fitness knowledge has been indispensable to her in helping others and get them to pursue and achieve their personal goals and dreams.
